Actress Kareena Kapoor addresses the media at Global Citizen India 2016. In India, there is a mentality that a boy will take care of the family while a girl will be a burden. Often reporters ask intrusive questions to female celebrities like: What is the gender of your baby? Will you go back to work? These questions are being asked because some Indians still expect women to stay home and take care of the children. Also, some Indians still believe that a male is superior over a female. The desire to have a boy often leads to female infanticide.

Stop telling yourself that the grass is greener on the other side, because it’s not. It is greener where you water it. So take control of your life and start watering your own pastures and grow your own greener grasses.
Angels enter your home and look for you on the street. Hoping you mention God so that God can mention you. Hoping you remember Him so they can ask on your behalf. Hoping you mention His name. Before you sleep, before you wake, before you eat, before you dress, before you walk out of that door. Because He told them to. Allah’s mercy greets you on every road and on every corner. And that extends to every journey and every detour. Look at all of these small things Allah asks for you to remember him through so that He can bless and remember you. Do you think He would leave you when it comes to the big things?
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I respond to the dua (prayer) of every suppliant when they call on Me.
[Quran 2:186]
If you ask for the Almighty’s help, rest assured it will always come but more often, not how you expect. But the way it comes is exactly what you need! He knows that. Only He knows you better than you know yourself. Bear patience and wait for the best outcome!

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am. I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.’”

Today many of us are or will be surrounded by loved ones in sha Allah, enjoying delicious food and treats. As we celebrate and enjoy God’s countless favors upon 1us, let us also remember the following…
1. Remember to make du'a for those who are no longer with us and have transitioned to their Lord.
2. Remember to make du'a for those who are ill and fighting serious illness or injury; those whose seats will be empty this year because they are lying in hospital beds instead.
3. Remember to make du'a for those who are separated from their loved ones due to work, school, immigration issues, or other reasons and who are alone or isolated.
4. Remember to make du'a for those who are estranged from their family members due to personal or legal issues, but miss them nonetheless and wish they could be with them.
5. Remember to make du'a for those who have converted to the religion and have either been disowned or ostracized by their fa1mily and thus are alone today.
6. Remember to make du'a for those who are fighting serious health issues and have strict dietary restrictions and cannot enjoy the delicious food that others around them will be eating.
7. Remember to make du'a for those who have had a deep personal loss or tragedy around this time and have a difficult time enjoying the holiday but still put on a brave face for the sake of everyone else around them.
8. Remember to make du'a for those who are having serious marital problems and possibly on the brink of divorce but have to set everything aside for the sake of their families.
9. Remember to make du'a for the orphaned children who have no family of their own to be with today.
10. Remember to make du'a for the elderly who are in nursing homes and whose family have forgotten them.
Being grateful to God isn’t just about recognizing the blessings He’s bestowed upon you and giving Him thanks. That should be standard practice regardless of how much you have or don’t have. He is deserving of all praise, all of the time!
Being truly thankful is also about paying it forward by beseeching Him on behalf of others who are also in need. This begins with making du'a but it also includes giving generously to those in need.
May God make us sincere in our gratitude so that it moves beyond the lips, settles in the heart, and extends with the hand. Amin.

One reason the concept of becoming better can scare us is that it requires us to step out of a place that we recognize and have possibly grown comfortable with. But remember transformation begins at the end of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid! Trust Allah and take baby steps and be optimistic! Allah will help you!
